Throughout the semester I learned more about what I love and prefer in the journalism field. While I have always worked in print journalism, I decided to take this class to gain experience in other departments. I also took on a news internship at a radio station to go along with this class this semester.
With all these new things coming my way this past semester, I learned that I prefer print journalism over any other kind of media. The writing aspect is what I love about being a journalist, not just the story.
When working on Lab 4, this was something I have never done before. When it came to different angles, editing and b-roll, I had no idea where to even start. As I began working in the lab I had to create a checklist of the types of shots I needed throughout the video.
I was comfortable with conducting the interview and making a conversational video. But when it came to the action shots of actually using the laptop, that was where I had to become more creative.
I feel as if I could move forward using a video feature more often and creating more content that way without hesitation.
As for written stories, when I wrote Lab 2, I was excited due to the writing aspect attached to the project. The twist for this assignment was adding the photos and captions within the story. Which I have only ever had to focus on one photo and one caption within a story.
This took a lot of thought process to make a photo story within a written story. I had to brainstorm all my photo ideas and created a well-rounded article for the assignment. While I didn’t find the assignment hard, it was something I haven’t done much of so I was excited to gain more experience in it.
I also feel like this class really helped me understand writing photo captions more. Writing captions in AP Style takes more practice than writing an AP Style story, in my opinion. So this class really helped clear up the expectations for them and now I feel more confident. I will be able to move forward using this skill more often.
But all the challenges this semester has thrown at me have been exciting because I do love trying new things. I am very passionate about what I’m doing and this class alone lets me experience more to grow and gain more confidence and skills that can help my future.
There were so many aspects of this class that I had done before but this allowed me to work more in depth with these features and understand more skills, better than I did before.
