Sports is a form of entertainment, almost everyone loves to watch sports, that game night is a great time to host a party with friends.
But what are you watching? Basketball? Probably the National Basketball Association (NBA).
The Women’s Nation Basketball Association (WNBA) is just as important as the NBA but the comparison of popularity isn’t even close. Viewers and management don’t see the WNBA as an equal of the NBA.
According to The Oakland Post and their article WNBA vs NBA Debate: The Issue, The WNBA players’ salaries is up to $110,000 while the NBA players’ salaries is at minimum eight times the amount of that at around $838,000. This just shows how much of a pay gap there for women compared to men.
Basketball is known to by one of the most diverse sports, with a wide variety of races, but when it comes to gender the teams are no longer seen as equal.
No matter how many women dunk, pass, or make free-throws in a game their teams will never be talked about as much as the NBA. It just comes to show how bias some of the viewers can be when it comes to sports.
Growing up you are always told men are better than women at sports. That thought process has been engraved in our minds and it shows when you turn on the tv and skip over the WNBA game.
Why would people rather see LeBron James compared to Diana Taurasi? She is one of the best in the WMBA league, but I bet anyone knows who she is.
The issue between these two is that the WNBA does not receive as much acceptance compared to the NBA.
The portrayal of gender within sports is known for seeing women as less than men. While basketball will continue down the right path of diversity within the race aspect, the fail to see the importance of women in the league.
People should not be overlooking the WNBA, they have skill too, they win games. The diversity in the basketball fans minds' needs to think more of the different gender angles.
